Marianas redware revival
Pottery sherds collected from ancient CHamoru archaeological sites on Guåhan dating back to 1500 B.C. show a unique style known as Marianas Redware. Traditionally, pieces were formed and intricately incised. Then the incisions were inlaid with limestone sand and fired to create a white glaze effect.
This is a moon jar, a traditional Korean vase shape, which is currently undergoing a modern revival. I wanted to integrate this popular form with my own interpretation of the Marianas Redware style and traditional CHamoru designs. They are a small appreciation of ancient motifs reimagined through modern studio ceramics.
